Just as He said

From this morning’s Easter sermon by Richard Littledale at Teddington Baptist Church:

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.” Matt. 26:5-6 (NIV)

It’s Easter today, the day on which Christians worldwide celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Two-thousand years ago Jesus rose from the dead – just as he said he would. He was right when he foretold how he would be betrayed. He was right when he described how he would suffer and die. And most importantly, he was right when he said that his death would not be the end.

But if he was right about his most incredible claim – that he would rise from the dead – might he not also be right about everything else he said? That as a man on earth he led a life that was always pleasing to God. That he is the only way to God – not that he knows the way, but that he is the way. That he has God’s authority to forgive and is able to give everlasting life to all those who put their trust in him. That he always was and always will be, having no beginning or end. That he is Lord over all.

Why should it matter to you whether Jesus is trustworthy? Because he also claimed that he would one day return to this earth. Not in weakness and humility as a baby, but with power and great glory. Not to die a criminal’s death but to judge the world. To set right everything that is wrong. To hold to account everyone who has rejected God and put themselves in his place.

The bad news is that according to the Bible, we are the ones who have rejected God – me, you and everyone who has ever lived. The good news is that God has a rescue plan: Jesus. The promise is that whoever puts their trust in Jesus will not perish (as they deserve) but have eternal life – life as it was meant to be – life knowing and enjoying God forever!

Freely you gave it all for us
Surrendered your life upon that cross
Great is your love
Poured out for all
This is our God

Lifted on high from death to life
Forever our God is glorified
Sovereign king
Rescued the world
This is our God
